SA Roads — Privaatheidsbeleid
Geldig vanaf 2026-08-19.
SA Roads is ‘n gemeenskapsdiens oor padtoestande in Suid-Afrika.
1. Wie verantwoordelik is
| Verantwoordelike party | Jacobus Lodewikus Kamffer |
| Adres | 14B Eike Pl, Glen Marais, Kempton Park, 1619, Suid-Afrika |
| Inligtingsbeampte | Die verantwoordelike party hierbo genoem |
Daardie adres is vir rekeningpos; gebruik privacy@saroads.co.za vir enigiets oor jou inligting — toegang, regstelling, uitvee, beswaar of ‘n klagte.
3. Wat ons insamel
3.1 Rekeninginligting
Bydraes is openbaar.
Aanmeldings oor ander mense se inhoud — vlae — is privaat.
| Doel | Inligting gebruik | POPIA-grondslag |
|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|
| Google (Firebase Authentication, Firestore, Cloud Functions, Cloud Storage, Cloud Messaging, Crashlytics, Analytics, App Check) | rekeninginligting, bydraes, diagnostiek | projekdata gestoor in België (europe-west1); Google is ‘n Amerikaanse maatskappy |
6. Jou bydraes word onder ‘n oop lisensie gepubliseer
Wanneer jy bydra, lisensieer jy daardie bydrae onder Creative Commons Erkenning 4.0 (CC BY 4.0).
7. Hoe lank ons dit hou
- Rekeninginligting — totdat jy jou rekening uitvee.
- jou aanmeldbewyse en verifikasierekord;
- jou profiel — vertoonnaam, profielfoto, e-posadres, taal, tuisprovinsie, voertuie, kennisgewingvoorkeure en die paaie wat jy volg;
- jou openbare bydraerprofiel;
9. Jou regte
Ingevolge POPIA mag jy:
- Kla by die Inligtingsreguleerder.

SA Roads is ‘n onafhanklike gemeenskapsprogram.
- SANRAL — South African National Roads Agency
- SANRAL i-Traffic — lewendige verkeer, voorvalle en padwerke
- Nasionale Departement van Vervoer
- Provinsiale regerings en hul padowerhede

Effective 2026-08-19.
This policy covers the SA Roads mobile app for Android, published on Google Play, and the saroads.co.za website.
SA Roads is a community road-condition service for South Africa. Travellers check what a road is actually like before they drive it, and file a report afterwards. This policy explains what personal information the app collects, why, who else sees it, and what you can do about it.
It is written to comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA). Where POPIA uses the term responsible party it means us; where it uses data subject it means you.
1. Who is responsible
| Responsible party | Jacobus Lodewikus Kamffer |
| Address | 14B Eike Pl, Glen Marais, Kempton Park, 1619, South Africa |
| Information Officer | The responsible party named above |
| Privacy contact | privacy@saroads.co.za |
SA Roads is operated by an individual, not a company, so there is no company registration number to give. Under POPIA the head of a private body is its Information Officer; where that body is a natural person, it is that person.
The app sends transactional email from app@saroads.co.za. That address is for account mail; use privacy@saroads.co.za for anything about your information — access, correction, deletion, objection or a complaint.
2. You can use most of SA Roads without an account
Browsing roads, searching, viewing the map and reading reports need no account and no sign-in. The road data itself is downloaded to your phone so it works without signal.
You need an account only to contribute — to file a report, comment, rate a road, confirm a condition, follow a road, or suggest a facility.
3. What we collect
3.1 Account information
When you create an account we collect:
- Email address, and whether it has been verified. Verification is required before you can contribute.
- Your name and profile picture, if you sign in with Google. Google gives us these; we do not receive your Google password.
- A password, if you sign in with email and password. It is held by Firebase Authentication and we never see it.
- Which sign-in method you used.
You can also set, and change at any time: your display name, your language (Afrikaans or English), your home province, up to five vehicles, your notification preferences, and the roads you follow (up to 200).
We additionally record when you last used the app, when you accepted the terms, and which version of the terms and of the content licence you accepted.
The service calculates a reputation score and a count of your accepted reports. These affect how much weight your reports carry. You cannot change them; you can see them.
3.2 Your contributions
A report can contain: the road and the point on it, the surface (tar or gravel), the overall condition, how corrugated a gravel road is, how many potholes a tar road has, hazards present or cleared, which vehicles you think are suitable, a star rating, mobile signal strength, facilities such as fuel or towing, and free text you write yourself.
You may also post comments, ratings, confirmations that a road is still as described, and suggestions for facilities or road names that are missing.
Contributions are public. They appear with your display name and your contributor level next to them. Do not put anything in a report or comment that you would not want published.
We automatically remove phone numbers, email addresses and similar contact details from comments and suggestions before they are stored. This is a safety measure and not a guarantee — do not rely on it.
Reports about other people’s content — flags — are private. The person you flag is never told who flagged them, and your name does not appear.
3.3 Location
- A report may carry a GPS point that you choose to attach. We use it to work out where along the road your report applies, so that “20 km in” means something. This is optional and under your control.
- “Near me” uses your device location to find roads around you. It happens on your phone.
- Route import — if you import a GPX file or paste a Google Maps link, we use the coordinates to work out which roads it covers.
We do not track your location in the background, and the app has no background location permission.
3.4 Device and usage information
- Crash diagnostics. If the app crashes we receive a crash report through Firebase Crashlytics: the error, where in the code it happened, and basic device information such as model and operating system version.
- Usage analytics. Firebase Analytics records app opens, screens viewed, session length, approximate location derived from your IP address, and device and app version. We use it to understand which parts of the app people actually use. We have switched off collection of advertising identifiers. SA Roads does not collect the Android advertising ID or the Android device ID, does not serve advertising, and does not use your information for advertising, ad measurement or ad personalisation.
- Push notification token, if you allow notifications, so that we can send them.
- An app-integrity check (Firebase App Check) that confirms requests come from a genuine copy of the app rather than a script.
- Your IP address, which is unavoidably visible to any service the app connects to, including the map tile provider.
3.5 Email we send you
We use Resend to send account email — address verification and password resets. Resend receives your email address and the contents of that message.
4. Why we use it, and on what basis
| Purpose | Information used | POPIA basis |
|---|---|---|
| Let you sign in and keep your account secure | account information | performance of a contract with you |
| Publish road conditions to other travellers | your contributions, display name, level | consent, given when you accept the content licence |
| Place a report accurately along a road | the GPS point on that report | consent |
| Weight reports by contributor reliability | reputation, accepted report count | legitimate interest in useful, non-manipulable data |
| Moderate abuse and keep the service usable | flags, moderation records, suspension state | legitimate interest |
| Fix crashes and improve the app | crash diagnostics, usage analytics | legitimate interest |
| Send you account email | email address | performance of a contract with you |
| Notify you about roads you follow | push token, followed roads | consent, given when you allow notifications |
You may withdraw consent at any time — see section 9. Withdrawing consent does not undo the publication licence on contributions you have already made; see section 6.
5. Who else receives your information
We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for advertising. We use these processors:
| Who | What they receive | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Firebase Authentication, Firestore, Cloud Functions, Cloud Storage, Cloud Messaging, Crashlytics, Analytics, App Check) | account information, contributions, diagnostics | project data stored in Belgium (europe-west1); Google is a US company |
| Google Cloud Translation | the text of comments, so they can be shown in both Afrikaans and English | Google infrastructure |
| Resend | your email address and the account email we send you | EU |
| OpenFreeMap | map tile requests, which carry your IP address. No account information | EU |
We will also disclose information if the law requires it, or where necessary to investigate abuse of the service.
Road data comes from OpenStreetMap and is published under the Open Database Licence. OpenStreetMap is a source of road data, not a recipient of your information.
Information leaving South Africa
Your information is stored outside South Africa, in the European Union, and Google is a United States company. POPIA section 72 permits this where the recipient is subject to laws or binding agreements providing comparable protection. We rely on our processors’ data-processing agreements and the European Union’s data-protection regime for that.
6. Your contributions are published under an open licence
When you contribute, you licence that contribution under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). Other people may reuse it, including commercially, as long as they credit the source.
That licence cannot be revoked. Deleting your account removes your name from your contributions but does not withdraw them from circulation, and cannot recall copies other people have already made. The app tells you this before you delete, and it is repeated here because it is the one thing on this page that cannot be undone.
7. How long we keep it
- Account information — until you delete your account.
- Deleted accounts — deletion has a 30-day grace period, during which you can sign in and cancel it. After that the account is removed and your contributions are anonymised. Section 8 sets out exactly what goes and what stays.
- Contributions — indefinitely, because they are what the service is. After account deletion they remain, without your name attached.
- Crash and usage data — for the retention periods Firebase applies, which we do not control beyond the settings available to us.
8. Delete your account
There are two routes, and they end in the same place.
In the app — Profile → Delete my account and contributions. The same screen offers Download my data first.
Without the app — if you have uninstalled SA Roads, or cannot sign in, email privacy@saroads.co.za from the address on the account and ask us to delete it. We may ask you to confirm that you control that address. We will not ask you for anything else, and there is no charge.
What happens
Deleting closes the account straight away and schedules its removal 30 days later. During those 30 days you can sign in and cancel — after them it cannot be undone.
Deleted after the 30 days:
- your sign-in credentials and authentication record;
- your profile — display name, profile picture, email address, language, home province, vehicles, notification preferences and the roads you follow;
- your public contributor profile;
- your notification tokens, so the app can no longer reach your devices.
Kept, and why:
- Your reports and comments stay published, with your name removed. The app shows them as Deleted user. Other people’s travel decisions rest on those observations, and section 6’s licence on them cannot be revoked.
- Your ratings and confirmations stay as unnamed data points. They never carried a name — only an internal identifier, a road and an answer — and once the account is gone that identifier points at nobody.
- Flags you raised about other people’s content stay. Removing them would drop the flag count on content a moderator has not looked at yet.
Deleting your SA Roads account does not touch the Google account you may have signed in with. That is theirs, not ours.
Deletion cannot recall copies already downloaded or derived — including the nightly road-index bundle on every other phone that has synced it.
9. Your rights
Under POPIA you may:
- Get a copy of your information. The app does this itself: Profile → Delete my account and contributions → Download my data first. It returns your profile, reports, comments, ratings and confirmations. It deliberately excludes flags you have made about other people, because that would identify you as the person who flagged them.
- Correct information that is wrong. You can edit your profile in the app. For anything else, contact us.
- Delete your account — see section 8, which also covers deleting it when you no longer have the app installed.
- Object to processing based on legitimate interest.
- Withdraw consent, including by turning off notifications in your device settings.
- Complain to the Information Regulator.

Please contact us first if you can — most things are faster to fix directly.
10. Security
Access to your information is enforced on the server, not merely hidden in the app. Your profile and email address are readable only by you and by administrators. Raw votes, confirmations and flags are never publicly readable; only the aggregated result is. Traffic is encrypted in transit.
No service can promise perfect security, and we do not.
11. Children
SA Roads is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
12. About the road information itself
This is not a privacy matter, but it belongs next to it. SA Roads is an independent community app. It does not represent a government entity, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by SANRAL, the National Department of Transport, or any provincial or municipal road authority.
SA Roads publishes what drivers report about a road. It is not advice, and it is not an official statement that a road is open, closed or safe — those are functions of SANRAL and the provincial road authorities. Every claim in the app is shown with its age. Decide for yourself, and check the official sources before you travel:
- SANRAL — South African National Roads Agency
- SANRAL i-Traffic — live traffic, incidents and roadworks
- National Department of Transport
- Provincial governments and their road authorities
13. Changes to this policy
We will update this page when the app changes, and change the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will tell you in the app.
